“10 Minutes Closer to Freedom”

In this episode of Thoughts from Maharrey Head, I talk about a recently published academic paper that obliterates conventional thinking about nullification and interposition.

In 1798, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison penned the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions in response to the Alien and Sedition Acts. These documents, approved by the Kentucky and Virginia state legislatures, laid out the principles of nullification and interposition. In a nutshell, Jefferson and Madison established that the states have the authority and the duty to intervene and stop federal actions that violate the Constitution.

Conventional wisdom holds that every other state rejected the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions. Federal supremacists use this “fact” to “prove” that Madison and Jefferson’s ideas were far outside of the mainstream and therefore not worth considering.

In this episode of Thoughts from Maharrey Head, I tell you about a recently published academic paper that proves that there was far stronger support for the resolutions than earlier academics led us to believe and talk about what this means for us today.
