The recent Brexit vote has a lot of people talking about the idea of secession. Americans by-and-large have this strange, incongruous view of the idea. On the one hand, they celebrate secession every July4. On the other hand, many view southern secession as a traitorous action and the American Union as sacrosanct.
In this episode of Thoughts from Maharrey Head, I explain that the Declaration of Independence is, at its heart, a secession document. I talk about the natural right of people to “altar or abolish” government and institute new government. And I examine the constitutionality of state secession in America.
