“10 Minutes Closer to Freedom”

We usually think of the American Revolution as the war with the British. But there was an even more fundamental revolution that began long before the first shot was fired – a revolution in political thought. I talk about it in this episode of Thoughts from Maharrey Head.

In an 1818 letter to Hezekiah Niles, John Adams wrote that a “radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and affections of the people, was the real American Revolution.”

One of the most fundamental questions in political thought relates to sovereignty. Who has the final say? Where does the ultimate authority lie?

Americans’ conception of political sovereignty shifted drastically through the 1700s.,

In this episode of Thoughts from Maharrey Head, I talk about the evolution in political thought leading up to and continuing through the end of the American Revolution. I focus specifically on the way Americans’ thinking about the source of governmental power shifted and how that relates to the U.S. Constitutional system today.
